During a canopy control course, it's nice to get out between 7 & 8K. This allows ample time to practice everything covered in class. Unfortunately, the weekend weather was not cooperating. We'd be getting out under 4K. I felt like I would need to rush to get it all done. When I was under canopy, I forgot a couple of things we had discussed during our class.
6/22/05: Jump 20 - DeLand, FL - AFF: CAT F: Canopy Control Course - Exit Altitude: 3,500 - Pilatus Porter Turbo - Dive Flow: Rear Riser Stalls / Toggle Stalls. Waited for opening in clouds, jumped out and pulled. Looked for Michael and found him far away. Rear Riser Stalls: Canopy folds together like an accordion. Released, Checked Altitude. Toggle Stall - didn't work. Wrapped lines around my hands - tried toggle stalls again - watched as the canopy ends came together - swung forward under canopy. Released stall to quickly. Surged forward. Started landing pattern at 1,000 feet. Ran out of altitude on final approach. Flared late. Butt slide. Scott Miller - D-13234
There isn't enough room in the log book to include everything. If there was, I probably would have mentioned that releasing my toggle stall to quickly scared the crap out of me!!! I was also disappointed with another butt slide. We dropped off our gear and headed back to the classroom for our final session.
